Hunting: EU pressing on Italy to stop using live calls. Infringement procedure moves on to the second stage.
BRUSSELS - Europe's pressing on Italy to stop the use of live calls, as required by the Birds Directive, a practice still widespread in Veneto, Lombardy, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Marche and the Province of Trento.
In February 2014, the Commission sent a letter of formal notice to Italy, asking for the cessation of this prohibited practice and concluding that there were no prerequisites for a derogation.
Given that Italy has failed to remedy the violation of European law, the Commission has decided to send a reasoned opinion. The country now has two months to comply.
In the event of non-compliance, the matter could come to the attention of the Court of Justice.
