It will take place over the weekend of the next 3 and 4 December in Antillo, in the province of Messina, on 8a edition of the "Festival of the pig and the wild boar".
The event aims to spread the traditional products typical of the area obtained from pigs and wild boars outside the territory of origin of the municipality of Antillo; in particular the sausages, the cured meats, obviously the porchetta the lard, and the so-called "frittuli", all products in short that in the same province of Messina are already very popular.
Another purpose of the festival is to re-evaluate the breeding of the pig, an activity that despite appearing today in decline is very widespread in the municipality of Antillo, in which it establishes a centuries-old tradition, and which has always represented an important part of the local economy. In the past, the municipality of Antillo boasted a real mass breeding of pigs compared to the whole Val d'Agrò.
Considering that the presence of wild boar is spreading in the Antillean area it was decided to extend the festival also to products derived from this ungulate precisely to make it known and appreciated both the meat and the products deriving from it.
Despite in the Antillo woods there is a very abundant presence of wild boars that can be hunted in the periods allowed by the regional hunting calendar, some local breeders have decided to specialize in the breeding of this species, which still belongs to the pig family.
In the context of the Festival of the pig and the wild boar there will be also a large market exhibition of all the typical Antillean products including mushrooms, cheeses, oil, wine, honey, macaroni, homemade bread, dried fruit and many other local handicraft products.
The Antillo Pig and Boar Festival will start on Saturday 3rd December from 16,00 pm while on Sunday 4th December the event will start from 10,00 am.
