Agreement concluded between Province of Modena, Municipalities and entities concerned and hunters for the control plan for the diffusion of otters on the territory. The control activity against the proliferation of nutria, coordinated by the Province, will continue on the basis of a three-year agreement, valid until 2023, which involves municipalities and various bodies including the Region, Aipo, land reclamation consortia and ATC of the plains and hills. The convention, approved in recent days unanimously by the Provincial Council, confirms the model of collaboration between institutions, launched in 2015 and continued in recent years with results deemed positive: thanks to the involvement of over five hundred assistant hunters an average of about nine thousand culls are carried out every year.
Il City of Carpi, like all those of the medium and low plains, it is particularly interested as the otters with their burrows help to erode the banks of rivers and canals. The embankments thus mined are more subject to subsidence and consequently to cause flooding. «Coordination at the provincial level - he stressed Gian Domenico Tomei, President of the Province of Modena - ensures support to the Municipalities that often individually do not have the tools and resources to manage a fundamental activity for the safety of rivers. The use of qualified hunters, with the coordination of the provincial police, works and represents a model, also for other realities, which we intend to continue ».
The agreement involves, in addition to Carpi, Soliera and Campogalliano, eight other municipalities in the Modena plain, the Regional Civil Protection Agency, the Union of Municipalities of the Northern Area, the Burana and Central Emilia Reclamation Consortia, the agricultural associations, the Aipo, the territorial areas for hunting Mo1 and Mo2. The total cost of the operations, in support of management costs and monitoring and control activities, is over 90 thousand euros, divided among all the subjects involved, for the Municipalities based on the population and the number of past slaughters, to which are added contributions equal to 25 thousand euros by the Region and by the hydraulic bodies.
