Hunting optics: Hunting requires quick reflexes and acute eyesight, especially when looking for wild boars or other game typical of the woods or high mountains. However, this same game is very active in the most difficult hours of the day, that is at dawn or dusk, when the human eye can see things with difficulty.
In these particular conditions it may be useful to mount an aiming or sighting scope on your rifle. In previous articles we have examined many of them and will continue to do so always and exclusively in the interest of hunters. The product we review in this article is perhaps one of the few that combines high quality with an affordable price.
We are talking about a telescope built in the United States, according to the quality and production standards of this great economic power, but at prices suitable for those who cannot afford to buy two thousand euro optics. Often, low-income hunters are forced to accept the compromise of using Chinese-made optics, certainly good, but low in price and with performance not suitable for all types of hunting.
With the perspective that we present in this article, the compromise is no longer the hunter, but the manufacturing company, Redfield, which with its riflescopes has been able to conquer the European market, and not only, by aiming precisely on the quality / price ratio, where the first parameter remains high even in the face of a fairly accessible and in any case not excessive cost. Highly recommended for hunting are the Redfield riflescopes from the “Revolution” series. There is little to say about the technical characteristics and optical efficiency of these products, and that little is all positive, because these spotting scopes are produced in the Leupold factories, which have always been a guarantee of quality and efficiency. In the same factories, the optics are tested and calibrated to meet all shooting and hunting needs. Redfield has been manufacturing optics for many years, in an Oregon factory.
The company, which as we have already said is part of the Leupold Group, over the years has not stopped only in the American market, but thanks to a vast network of dealers has also managed to establish itself in the European and international market. For Leupold, doing business with the world was not difficult, because his origins are already international. The company, in fact, was founded in 1907 by a German immigrant, Fred Leupold who set up a shop for the repair of various types of optics. Even today, the company is owned by the Leupold and Stevens family and produces optics for hunting, shooting and military purposes. Throughout its career, Leupold has never received criticism or complaints from customers, confirming the excellent quality of its products.
The Redfield Revolution riflescopes are distinguished by the extreme brightness of the lenses, made with the advanced Illuminator system.
The lenses, chosen from among those of the highest quality, are treated with a vapor base coated with a dielectric multilayer that guarantees high light transmission even in poor visibility conditions. The other advantages of the Redfield Revolution optics are the “Accu - Track” adjustment system, the “Rapid Target Acquisition” eyepiece and the “Accu - Range” ballistic reticle. The “Accu Track” turret adjustment system allows you to calibrate the optics for different shooting distances, by manually adjusting the clicks which in this scope correspond to ¼ of Moa. This acronym, acronym of Minute of Angle, which means "minute of angle", indicates the sixtieth part (ie one minute) of a round angle, which is equal to 360 degrees. When we say that a click (adjustment click) is equal to ¼ of Moa, it means that the displacement corresponds to the fourth part of 1 Moa, that is, the fourth part of the sixtieth part of the round angle. There are optics that have clicks that correspond to 1/8 or ½ of Moa, but ¼ is still a good enough standard for hunting optics.
The adjustment allows you to adjust the position of the reticle vertically, i.e. in height, and laterally, i.e. horizontally or in derivation.
In mathematical terms, to know the value of 1 Moa, multiply the value of the round angle, i.e. 360, x 60, obtaining the value 21600, and calculate the length of the circumference of the radius, i.e. the chosen distance, for example 100 meters. With this distance, the circumference is equal to the formula: 2 x pigreco (3,14) x100, i.e. 628 meters. This value is then divided by 21600 and the value of 1 Moa is obtained, which is equal to 0,0290 m, i.e. 29 mm. ¼ of Moa is therefore equal to 29 millimeters divided by 4. Without getting lost in complicated mathematical rules, we can only say that the click corresponds to the click of the turrets, a click that allows you to move the aiming point of the reticle even slightly. In this way, the center of the reticle is in the right position for the distance from which you will have to hit and the type of shot to be used. The calibration of the Redfield Revolution riflescope can be carried out at the shooting range, so that you do not have problems with corrections while hunting. Furthermore, with the calibration already set, any corrections will be easier to perform.
In the various models of Redfield Revolution spotting scopes, 50, 56 or 65 clicks of maximum vertical and lateral adjustment can be made.
The eyepiece of the Redfield Revolution, on the other hand, uses the “Rapid Target Acquisition” system, which allows you to immediately focus on the target thanks to a maximum pupillary distance. The “Accu - Range” ballistic reticle is also designed to enhance the hunting performance of the Redfield Revolution riflescope. This lattice is made up of a large circle (typical of all lattices) and a smaller one towards the center. With this reticle you can place shots even at short distances and with any type of cartridge. The Redfield Revolution riflescope has an unlimited warranty and also guarantees 100% anti-fog lenses, thanks to the nitrogen-treated tubes. The Redfield Revolution riflescopes are available in these magnifications: 2-7x33mm, 3-9x40mm, 3-9x50mm and 4-12x40mm. The weight of these lenses is between 315 and 371 grams. The field of view at 100 meters is between 14, 4 - 5,8 meters, 11 and 4,4 meters and 6,6 - 3,1m. The scope has a matte finish and the classic 4-Plex reticle is also available in some models. Of course, the Redfield optics of the Revolution series are variable magnification. What is fixed and locked is, however, the price, which does not exceed 360 euros.
