A sharp "no" has arrived from the regions, including Lombardy, National management plan for nutria presented a few days ago by the Minister for the Environment Sergio Costa: «The document presented by Rome - he explains Albert Cortesi, president of Confagricoltura Mantova - essentially contains only good intentions, but does not provide for the allocation of concrete funds, which are instead absolutely necessary for the start of aeradication of the species real. We are in an emergency, we will never get tired of repeating it, and the time for chatter is over. Now we need concrete actions ».
The damage caused by rodents has assumed devastating proportions in recent years. There are not only direct damage to crops, but also serious problems with the banks, increasingly yielding, with high risks for human activity. In 2019 41.514 otters were captured in the province of Mantua, in 46 municipalities: «All this is not enough - continues Cortesi - it is not enough. The municipalities involved increased slightly, are four more than in 2018, but there are still too many who register a zero in the captions entry. In this way we will not be able to proceed towards eradication, we need a decisive change of pace ».
On the provincial territory, as well as at the regional level, coordinated interventions were made between various local realities: "An example of efficiency that we invite you to replicate - says Cortesi - but there is no doubt that without a great national plan, and without available funds, all this will lose its effectiveness. As Confagricoltura Mantova, we join the appeal launched by the regional councilor Fabio Rolfi, so that the institutions take action on the issue as soon as possible. We can not wait anymore».
