La Calabria Region has decided to step up the fight against wild boars through the selection plan. As disclosed by the Department of Agriculture, the selectors involved are about 160 and have been active since the middle of last March. As for the areas, however, there are four provinces: Cosenza, Crotone, Catanzaro and Vibo Valentia, in which there were 120 culls. According to reports from the local authority, the farms have expressed their appreciation for the activity carried out, given that the productions have been protected, without forgetting the health and safety of citizens.
As pointed out by James Giovinazzo, general manager of the same Department: "Being well aware of the negative implications of the wild boar emergency, not only with regard to economic activities, but also from an environmental, social and health point of view, we are working to keep the situation under control and bring it back to normal. Our goal is in fact to ensure that the planned interventions can lead to beneficial results not just momentary, bringing the wild boar populations back into balance with other territorial factors, also protecting the heritage represented by wildlife, which is an environmental asset of value for mankind.
We are working to bring it to fruition the old three-year plan extended until August, but we intend to finish it before the set date, by which time we will cull 500 heads in all four provinces. At the same time, we are finalizing the new three-year selection plan, which will come into force immediately after August, in which we want to include a damage zoning, achievable thanks above all to the reports and contributions of farmers and citizens, who must continue to provide us with information on the areas most affected by the phenomenon, to allow us to intervene in the best possible way ".
