The rumors were right, after the many doubts harbored by various Italian regions, the State Regions Conference has decided to postpone the so-called “Piano-Lupo”, which provides for a controlled killing of animals. The new examination of the text has been postponed for three weeks, given that the most probable date for the study is that of the next one. 23 February. The Minister of the Environment, Gianluca Galletti, has defended this plan several times and today's decision, Thursday 2 February 2017, was accepted without controversy.
In fact, Galletti himself wished that the postponement serves to restore greater serenity to the debate. Controlled killing has been defined by the Minister as an instrument that cannot and must not be renounced if one wishes to obtain the natural balance between men and wolves.
The animal welfare associations were divided in the reactions to the news: for the WWF this is an important signal, while Legambiente explained that it did not consider the postponement useful to protect the species and respond to the difficulties of farmers. Between regions that had shown themselves perplexed and doubtful include Lazio and Puglia (contrary from the first moment), Abruzzo, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Piedmont, Liguria and Campania.
