In Toscana it is not only wild boars that keep the attention in hunting debates: the Region has started the woodcock monitoring for a few days through the use of pointing dogs. The initiative concerns the areas of the woods that have been specifically defined by the regional forest law. Furthermore, a detail that is certainly not negligible, protected areas and those in which there is a permanent ban on hunting will not be monitored. Tuscany has put everything in black and white in one Executive Decree of last March 11 (number 11 to be precise).
The full title of the regulatory text is “Authorization and addresses regarding the organization of the monitoring of woodcock (Scolopax Rusticola) in the wintering areas during the hunting season and by pointing dogs”. There is also the clarification that the operation will end on 10 April (therefore still three weeks). The authorization has in fact approved two documents, namely the complete list of the monitors who are authorized and of the enabled pointing dogs (the attachment was published last December 1st) and the woodcock monitoring card with the same dog (it is the second annex to the Executive Decree).
However, it is not an isolated case. In fact, Tuscany is in the company of other Italian regions and the goal to reach is always the same, therewith in-depth knowledge of the phenology (the science that studies the life cycle of a living organism) of the migration and wintering of this bird. The typical behavior of the woodcock is elusive and is not a frequent object of study, despite the fact that we are talking about a common and more than coveted species for what concerns hunting (they are a clear testimony the dog trials that take place all over the country and the satisfaction of hunters who manage to get close to the bird).
The monitoring will be carried out in sample areas of the Tuscan woods: i pointing dogs used will be those in possession of the qualification, obtained in the work tests with ENCI regulation (Italian National Dog-loving Body). The same goes for dog handlers, enabled following the attendance of specialized courses which must be approved by ISPRA (Higher Institute for Environmental Protection). Operators are required to fill in the appropriate monitoring forms mentioned above, documents to be sent to the Tuscany Region, more precisely to the sector "Hunting, Amateur Fishing, Sea Fishing - Regional Wildlife Observatory". There will be time for this dispatch until the next one 30th April, a non-derogable and mandatory term.
