In the next hunting season, in the Ligurian areas not subject to swine fever restrictions, they can be killed up to 35.451 wild boars, equal to 180% of what has been done in the last year. The growth of the huntable contingent responds to precise indications of the Ministries of Health and Agricultural Policies for the containment of African swine fever, which provide the reduction of 80% of the wild boar population between hunting and control sampling. The objective set for 2022/2023 is quite ambitious, so much so that the Region hypothesizes future incentives, including economic ones, aimed at the hunting world.
Regional offices estimate that the wild boar population varies in Liguria between 35.000 and 56.000 head, with a concentration in particular in Genoa and neighboring municipalities which, it is emphasized, “has reached amounts that are no longer compatible with the performance of normal activities by citizens”. Piazza De Ferrari also puts in black and white the need for strengthen the regional sector responsible for wildlife control activities, coordinated by the same Region.
At the moment the Liguria, has 30 units of personnel belonging to the regional wildlife-environmental surveillance unit, the only subjects capable of carrying out the killing, as they possess the qualifications of public security and judicial police officers. To increase the control of the territory, the regional council has still authorized the active search for wild boar carcasses, to be subjected to analysis for the possible finding of swine fever, also by mushroom and truffle hunters as well as by hunters registered in the territorial areas who intend to carry out dog loosening and training activities. According to the latest update provided by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute on 7 August, 61 wild boar carcasses positive for swine fever have been found in Liguria starting from 27 December last (RaiNews).
