“A situation that is becoming unsustainable for our businesses and for the safety of citizens and that it is compromising the environmental balance of vast Piedmontese territorial areas, even in areas of high naturalistic value. The situation reached saturation with wild boars and the wildlife in continuous growth. Moreover, such a high presence of wild boars on the territories is a danger for the introduction of the African swine fever virus and also for the spread of bacterial infectious diseases to humans". This is what he highlights Roberto Moncalvo Confederal Delegate of Coldiretti Cuneo compared to the 2 million specimens of wild boars in Italy which increasingly represent a risk, not only for crops, but also for citizens. Numerous studies have shown the presence, in the blood of various wild boar populations, of antibodies for zoonotic viruses, or those infectious diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
Among the most important viruses capable of passing from wild boar to man is the one responsible for hepatitis E, the swine flu virus and the Japanese encephalitis virus. "The functionality of natural ecosystems is also affected - continues Moncalvo - in addition to the fact that wild boars cause considerable damage to agriculture that are not even covered by the compensation because the loss of income caused to entrepreneurs goes far beyond the value of the compensation obtainable. From the investigation Coldiretti / IXÈ it is highlighted that, first of all, citizens are frightened by the presence of wild boars: over 6 out of 10 Italians (62%) are afraid of wild boars and almost half (48%) would not even take home in an area infested by these animals .
A situation that has reached the limit, so much so that more than 8 out of 10 Italians (81%) they think that the wild boar emergency must be tackled with the use of killing employing specialized personnel to reduce the number. "It is urgent to intervene with an integrated approach - reaffirms Fabiano Porcu, Director of Coldiretti Cuneo - a package of actions that, if on the one hand must act on both numerical and spatial reduction, on the other must materialize in measures that may also allow the auditors to adopt emergency ordinances to authorize extraordinary containment measures ".
