PESCARA The prevention of damage from wild boar is the essential lever to stem a phenomenon that in the province of Pescara represents a major problem for crops and for public safety. The President of the Province Guerino Testa and the Councilor for Hunting Mario Lattanzio are convinced of this.
«The wild boars», says Lattanzio, «are constantly monitored through censuses on the basis of which“ selective killing ”are carried out in June and July, that is, when most of the agricultural crops reach maturity and the damage is concentrated more». Thanks to this activity, over the years, it has been possible to keep under control the problems caused by wild boars to crops. Until 2010 the damage in the territory of the province of Pescara was around 100-150 thousand euros a year, in 2011, the only year in which for logistical reasons it was not possible to carry out selective killing, these have risen to 250 thousand euros for then drop in 2012 to 170 thousand euros with the resumption of slaughter.
«To cope with the control of the wild boar species», continues the councilor, «the Province collaborates with the ATC (Territorial hunting area) which takes care of the censuses and drawing up the killing plans. This year, with the ATC, we have made available to farmers electrified fences to protect high-income crops and limited area (vegetable gardens), a system permitted by law ", which made it possible to reduce claims for damages. .
Lattanzio again: "We hope to extend this type of intervention, which involves the Region and the Parks as well as the ATC. I appeal to the managers of the Parks to collaborate and respect the memorandum of understanding signed with the Province before the prefect to prevent damage to property and people ".
