The Councilor for Agriculture, Stefano Mai, intervenes following theaccident that happened in Rovegno. "First of all I want to offer my condolences to the relatives of the victim and show my closeness". “The wild boar is a wild animal, therefore dangerous for humans. It should be contained ". “The situation in Liguria is no longer sustainable. We need coordinated action at national level. The tools we have are not enough ”. "In a few days we will open a crisis table for wild boars and wildlife as a whole". “The population dealing with wild boars is exasperated.
Not only do they cause enormous damage to agriculture and livestock, but it has now become almost impossible even to cultivate a vegetable garden for self-consumption. We need new tools. As the Liguria Region we have already activated all possible interventions but they are not sufficient ". “Liguria has 75% of the wooded area. The woods reach the coast. This allows wild boars to proliferate and move everywhere, arriving without problems in the city where they can easily find food due to the presence of urban waste. Furthermore, there are irresponsible people who feed these animals, weighing on the balance of the ecosystem, changing their habits and bringing them more and more to have confidence with man ”.
“For three years we have approved in the Agricultural Policies Commission at national level, with the unanimity of all the Regions, the request to modify at least article 19 of law 157 to have assistants to support the control of these animals. This is a 30-year-old law that should be revised in its entirety, but the proposal has been stuck in Rome for three years. The infamous and short-sighted animal rights policy of some ministers is making the situation no longer acceptable. When with the provinces we had 81 provincial agents on the territory, they were helped by about 5 thousand coadjutor hunters. Today we have only 25 regional agents who can take care of the problem.
As the Liguria Region we have tried twice, with two regional laws, to reintroduce the coadjutors, but the laws have been rejected by the Constitutional Court because this legislation does not fall within the competence of the Regions. Then we need a national intervention. The government cannot stand by and make citizens, companies and institutions succumb to this problem. I will again bring this request to all institutional tables ". “Within the month we will open the first call of measure 4.4 of the Rural Development Program with which we will make available 1 million euros for electric fences and LGDs. Within the year we will open the second call of 4.4 again with another million euros to finance the installation of metal fences. Everything we can do, I repeat, we do ".
