It often happens that hunters take care of the restoration of compromised environments from the long lack of care in the mountain areas. This is the case of the public game reserve of Monteaperti, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, which for the second consecutive year has mowed, thanks to its own funds and funding from the Region, the prealpine grasslands at an altitude of just under 1600 meters, adjacent to the crest of the Gran Monte in the Municipality of Taipana (province of Udine), which gave the authorization.
Based on a project by biologist Antonella Stravisi, after having transported the equipment based at the ANA Monteaperta Refuge by helicopter, the hunters have mowed some tens of thousands of square meters giving breath back to a prairie where once the mountaineers made hay for the winter season.
An indispensable job to eliminate the felted grass it represents a serious fire hazard and above all to the advantage of alpine galliformes such as the Black Grouse and the Rock Partridge. The hay was collected in the traditional "mede", sheaves that will constitute a quality feeding point for the numerous deer, chamois and roe deer that populate the Reserve (RaiNews).
