It is certainly not the case of uncorking bottles of sparkling wine or organizing a fireworks display, but what happened yesterday afternoon on a Rai radio program speaks volumes about the changed climate in Italy.
It happened that, during the very popular show "A sheep's day" by Giorgio Lauro and Claudio Sabelli Fioretti (whose anti-hunting passion is well known) the new Minister for the Environment, Corrado Clini, was asked if he was pro or against hunting.
Dr. Clini's surprising response was more or less this: “I have no preconceived positions for or against hunting. I am not a hunter but I have friends who are and I believe that environmentally friendly hunters are good people. On the other hand, those who shoot here and there without too many compliments are less so ”.
Coming from the well-known and visceral anti-venatorial positions of some ministers, this first declaration by the new holder of the Department of the Environment satisfies us fully and gives us hope for a future ministerial activity based on technical-scientific pragmatism rather than ideologies.
Thank you, Minister, and good luck with your work.
