Massimiliano Pompignoli, regional councilor ofEmilia Romagna (Lega) asked for urgent action to resolve the wolf problem in this area. A herd attacked a sheep farm a few days ago in Sogliano sul Rubicone (Forlì-Cesena) and the Carroccio would like some selective killing methods for counter hybridization and the advance of the species in the valleys of Emilia and Romagna. Here is what Pompignoli wrote about it: “Pretending that the emergency does not exist certainly does not help to resolve it.
Violence of this kind is no longer debatable, as are the damages, of several thousand euros, caused by the reappearance of the wolf in the livestock sector and to the farms of our Region. But not only; beyond the extent of the damage and the absolutely ridiculous regional reimbursements for attacks caused by wild animals, the species, as you know, is subject to the threat of hybridization and the onset of infectious phenomena which alter its conservation, habitat and state of health. This Region must take note of the ongoing emergency and must find the courage with adequate tools, to regulate it.
This means that within the regional regulatory framework, Emilia-Romagna must run for cover and adopt more decisive and effective management measures to counter the advance of the wolf. Among these, as we have repeatedly reiterated also in the approval of the regional hunting plan, in our opinion there can only be the forecast, limited to hybrids, to grant the removal, capture and killing, provided that there is no other valid solution and that such actions do not jeopardize their maintenance, in a satisfactory state of conservation, in its natural distribution area ".
