Some researchers of the University of Alberta, in Canada, studied a group of royal deer females, Also known as red deer, to be precise, the animals found in the southwestern area of the North American country. The goal of the analysis was to understand why male specimens live more than five years, while females are capable of reaching even twenty.
Experience is crucial in this regard, as it has been discovered how these deer learn in their life how avoid the hunters. The ungulates studied were equipped with GPS, in order to record every single position at precise time intervals. As the years go by, the female royal deer begin to follow shorter routes and in this way they greatly reduce the chances of encounters with hunters.
Among other things, they tend to remain in steep terrain during the hunting season precisely to prevent an excessive approach. Canadian researchers speculated an identical capacity also in males, but the horns represent a source of greater attraction, without forgetting the role of calls. Finally, it should not be forgotten that females are used to move in packs, so when one is shot down, the others soon learn the risks.
