The Regional Council of Friuli Venezia Giulia a few weeks ago approved the three-year plan to limit the proliferation of nutria. As noted by the University of Udine, the specimens present in the northern region there are about 70 thousand, which is why it is necessary to intervene with some urgency. The plan will last until 2020 and the ultimate goal will be containment, without excluding protected areas.
The interventions will be carried out together with the Land reclamation consortia, called to identify the areas most at risk. The containment will be guaranteed by the qualified personnel of the Region, but also by farmers in possession of a hunting license, as long as there is prior communication to the Forest Inspectorate. The direct killing, then, can be carried out by the municipal guards, by the staff of the regional forestry corps, by the park surveillance staff, by volunteer guards and specially selected operators.
However, it must be remembered that direct killing with a firearm is not allowed within those areas (even the venable ones) in which the presence of the Otter. In this way, accidental killing of animals that are not involved but that resemble the rodent from a morphological point of view will be avoided.
