Hunting and Fauna. Reached an agreement between bodies for rodent population control plans, after the new national legislation.
Over 500 certified ATC hunters will be employed against the proliferation of otters in the provincial territory of Modena who, with the coordination of the Provincial Police, will intervene with their weaponry on the basis of the control plans indicated by the municipalities.
This is what is provided, in summary, by the convention for the management of nutria approved unanimously, on Monday 19 October, by the Provincial Council to which 12 Municipalities of the Modena plain, the Union of Municipalities of the Northern Area, the reclamation consortia adhere. Burana and central Emilia, agricultural associations and Aipo.
"Since last year - underlined Gian Carlo Muzzarelli, president of the Province of Modena - the competence over the control plans has passed from the Province to the Municipalities which, however, did not have the technical tools and resources necessary to individually address the proliferation of a species that I risk our levees and cause damage to agriculture. For this reason, the Province, by making available its skills, acquired over the years, has assumed a coordinating role which, through this agreement, makes it possible to tackle the problem effectively ”.
The law of 2014, in fact, classifies the otters on a par with mice, rats and moles over which the Municipality is competent, in the context of hygienic-sanitary protection, while previously, being included in the national standard on wildlife, they were of competence of the Province through the control plans. The agreement allows the realization of the slaughter plans by the Municipalities which will be carried out by the coadjutor hunters authorized on the basis of the hunting methods and with the use of traps. And when hunting is open, hunters will also be able to participate in the activity.
The total cost of the operations is almost 90 thousand euros, divided among all the entities, based on the population and the number of past slaughters, to support management costs and monitoring and control activities.
"Now with this agreement - says Fabio Leonelli, commander of the Provincial Police - we will be able to intensify the killing that in 2015 could reach a total of over six thousand, in line with the activity carried out in the past by the Province which allowed in six years to demolish over 50 thousand".
