The councilor for the parks of Veneto, Franco Manzato, on the problem of wild boars in the Lessinia area and the Euganean Hills.
"The situation is unsustainable and exasperating: these wild animals cause considerable damage to things, among other things bringing many farms to their knees, and constitute a serious danger to people". This was stated by the councilor for the parks of Veneto Franco Manzato, referring to the uncontrolled proliferation of wild boars in the area of the Euganean Hills Regional Park and massively also in that of Lessinia.
Continuing Manzato explained, "In theory, since it is not a native species but arrived in these localities from who knows where, we must by law eradicate its presence, but at the same time, always by law, in the parks they are forbidden, including other, the capture, killing, damage, disturbance of animal species ".
The commissioner then added “Again in theory, an exception is envisaged with the possibility of any faunal sampling and any selective killing, as well as the reimbursement of damages. But there is no money for the first possibility, just as there is no money for the reimbursement of damages, with respect to which the community cannot pay twice, in naturalistic and economic terms ”.
Continuing Manzato said, "In any case, there are those who oppose the selection a priori, while, once again in theory, they should be the protagonist since the opposition arises from an affirmed interest in safeguarding the territory which is instead depleted from every point of view: human, fauna and biodiversity ".
The commissioner then pressed “This is the true, concrete, real state of affairs in the face of a story that can only get more complicated if we do not remedy it. Which and how? The last rationale would be the pure and simple abrogation of the Parks themselves, to be decided, paradoxically, precisely to save the territory. But the first choice for me is only one: to make productive selection, at least partially transforming this misfortune into a resource ".
Finally, the commissioner Manzato concluded with a proposal, "Our wild boars, which seem to be much more massive than others because they are also the result of crosses with pigs, can and must become at least a typical product and a local specialty, with a selection that it finances itself. At least let's work on this ".
