The legislative proposal on hunting starts from Reggio Calabria, aimed at overcoming the gaps and delays of the current regional legislation as well as at extending the hunting period.
Following the latest protests of Calabrian hunters and hunting associations against the regional councilor Michele Trematerra for the restrictions contained in the approved Hunting Calendar, the secretary of the regional council Giovanni Nucera and the regional councilor of the mixed group, Pasquale Tripodi, promote the new legislation aimed at giving a precise response to the need to regulate the dog-hunting activity, currently excluded from the ATCs , while remaining within the scope of the regional wildlife plan.
The intent of this bill, therefore years after the approval of Regional Law n.9 of 1996, is to give a precise reorganization of the hunting activity in Calabria, in full compliance with the Regional Wildlife Plan, of the consequent hunting calendar in order to give the right impulse to the economic activities that revolve around the exercise of hunting otherwise penalized.
In fact, the new legislative project, regulating the hunting period and the huntable species, becomes an instrument for the protection and defense of the same species and at the same time meets the legitimate needs of hunters who would have the opportunity to practice for a longer period of time a activity that has a strong link with the territory, with nature and with the ancient regional traditions.
The new legislation provides for the maximum withdrawal limits for the various species and the prohibitions on hunting as well as the application of the consequent sanctions in the event of non-compliance with them. Specifically, the bill consists of fourteen articles and provides for the start of the hunting season starting from the third Sunday of September of each year for a period that will end on January 31 of the following year. During this period the activity can be carried out on three fixed days, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, for hunting wild boar, fox and hare, and the use of two-way communication equipment is allowed for safety purposes. Another content of the new legislative project is the possibility of hunting anatidae by means of temporary posting also on the coastal shore, obviously respecting the distances provided for the railway networks, blocks of flats and fixed posts. The woodcock hunt is scheduled from 7 to 16 in the period from October 16 to the penultimate Thursday of January while for the snipe the hunting period ends on January 31.
The new legislative proposal could not miss a derogation for turtledove hunting in pre-opening with respect to the beginning of the hunting season, ie from the first of September to the Saturday preceding the third Sunday of September; as regards quail, on the other hand, pre-opening is scheduled for the Saturday before the second Sunday of September until the Saturday before the third Sunday in September; from the first Thursday of September until the first Sunday of September it will be possible to hunt the wood pigeon. Expected by the two promoters an expansion and a precise regulation both of the possibility of regional mobilization of hunters, especially for migration, and of the training methods of pointing, search and followed dogs.
Obviously, the obligations and prohibitions deriving from national and EU legislation regarding protected species, special protection areas, wooded areas affected by fires, places mainly covered by snow, restocking and capture areas as well as the prohibition to use lead shot remain unchanged. near wetlands.
The developments of this Calabrian initiative are expected in the coming days, which will see a sure adhesion and participation of hunting associations.
