Dino Pepe, Councilor for Agriculture of the Abruzzo region, replied to the hypothesis of the Minister of the Environment, Sergio Costa, which would like suspend hunting on Sunday. According to Pepe, this is a proposal devoid of reflections, given that in these days the interests of partisan should be put away. The commissioner also recalled how the hunting calendar is the synthesis of different interests, both those of the hunting and environmental world. Pepe is convinced that hunting accidents are a reality due to the danger of the weapons used, but banning hunting on Sundays would change nothing.
Another clarification of the regional councilor concerned the real meaning of the hunting activity. For Pepe, hunting can also be controversial, but always useful for maintaining balance from the point of view of wildlife. Here is how his note continues: "We must understand that hunting wild boars also means making our roads safer, reducing the risk of road accidents caused by their crossing and also reducing the number of consequent victims and injuries.
It means making the work of men in the fields safer and more dignified, diminished and nullified by the damage caused mainly by this ungulate; it means protect and safeguard natural environments, some very delicate, increasingly devastated by hordes of wild boars; finally, it means contracting the public expenditure necessary for restoring the serious damage caused by all wildlife and mainly by this invasive ungulate. These are just some of the issues to be addressed when analyzing a phenomenon in its entirety, in order to arrive at balanced and shared measures through a constructive debate ”.
