Hunting for ungulates: Abruzzo, the region next to discuss the opening of hunting for deer and roe deer as part of the discipline of hunting ungulates.
"Next Wednesday the examination of the proposed regulation which also provides for the opening of deer and roe deer hunting is again on the agenda of the third commission of the Region." This was reported by Stefano Allavena Pietro Matta, LIPU Delegate for Abruzzo Regional coordination of Pro Natura, Maurizio Acerbo, Regional Councilor. “Deer and roe deer had become completely extinct in the past in Abruzzo mainly due to excessive hunting. They returned, starting from the 70s of the last century, thanks to reintroductions in protected areas and, in the case of roe deer, also by recolonization from neighboring regions. But this process is far from over ”. “It has already been widely discussed on March 5th. On that occasion, the opportunity emerged - a note reads - to approve a regulation that regulates wild boar hunting on a regional scale. In fact, until now, the hunt for this species has been characterized by great confusion so that in every hunting area we have proceeded independently and the result has certainly not been that of rationally organizing the hunting of wild boars ".
“On the other hand, it is necessary that the hunting of deer and roe deer should not be opened, even if preceded by censuses of the two species. - The writing continues - "absurd to think of opening the hunt for these two species given that the process of recolonization of large areas is still in full swing, - underlining - that the maximum concentration of deer is found in the External Protection Area of the National Park of Abruzzo. Opening deer and roe deer hunting in this area, which is extremely important for the Marsican bear, would mean adding a further serious disturbing factor to the many already present in the area, especially since the period of deer hunting would largely come to overlap with the so-called “hyperphagia”, that is, the one in which bears have to feed abundantly to prepare for the winter months ”.
They recall “in addition to local hunters, those from other areas would also be added. This fact would significantly increase, among other things, the probability of accidental killing even of specimens of protected species, starting with the Marsican bear, whose conservation status is, let us remember once again, very worrying. The regulation should therefore regulate the hunting of wild boar on a regional basis, in order to allow an adequate collection in such a way as not to jeopardize, among other things, other species, such as the bear and the wolf ".
“Opening the hunt - they conclude - to these two species would mean hindering if not blocking their expansion process. They are fundamental components of natural ecosystems and, above all the deer, constitute a notable attraction for naturalistic tourism, of great economic importance in Abruzzo and in the process of rapid development, even if our politicians continue undeterred not to understand their importance ".
