National and European politicians are currently expressing their concern about the management by the European Commission (DG Environment) the question of the further restriction onuse of lead proposed for wetlands under the regulation REACH. Indeed, it is claimed (see link) that the nature protection unit within DG Environment has violated the rules, encouraging the representatives of the assembled ministries in a group of experts to promote a positive opinion on a bill (concerning the use of lead for hunting in wetlands) which has exclusive competence within a formal committee, such as REACH, to influence final decisions.
"I asked for urgent meetings with the Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries and the Commissioner for the Internal Market - said Larsson -. The European Union is founded on strong principles of democracy, transparency and the rule of law.
There is no room for procedural errors on issues that affect millions of citizens and Europe needs a timely and clear response to these doubts. FACE works closely with the Nature Protection Unit, responsible for the implementation of EU nature directives ”.
