Hunting in Lunigiana: The number of wild boars slaughtered is falling: first estimates on withdrawals below expectations. The number of wolves in Lunigiana is growing.
The Management Committee of the Territorial Hunting Area of Massa Carrara thinks about the increase in game for the next season and sheds light on the future of the Zrc Fiume Magra. Valerio Poi, President Atc 13 Ms: “An important process for the recovery of abandoned land has begun”.
More game in the Lunigiana hunting areas. This is the proposal put forward by the Management Committee of the Atc 13 of Massa Carrara which is now considering - on December 22nd we will discuss the budget that should make additional resources available for this purpose - the possibility of increasing the number of heads, in particular hares, to be placed in hunting areas. The percentage increase that could be implemented in 2011 is now being examined.
Good news for hunting enthusiasts but good news also arrives for the agricultural world with the allocation of new resources for the expansion and recovery of land that is currently in a state of neglect to which environmental improvement interventions are connected. Interventions that will be added to those already implemented in 2009 which have led to the recovery of an important portion of the abandoned land on which settling structures for sedentary game have also been installed.
“Within the finalized plans that we will define in the coming months - anticipates the President of the Atc 13 Ms Committee, Valerio Poi - interventions are planned to expand the areas recovered in particular in the Arlia area; in this way we will recover the functionality of those lands left to their fate. We are also evaluating to involve an agricultural institute that can identify the sowing of traditional varieties to be reintroduced in the territory and that can also be used for purposes that are not only faunal ".
Among the topics of the debate there is also a portion of the River Magra Restocking and Capture Area for which the Province of Massa Carrara has asked hunting and trade associations to appoint a member within the management commission: "The choice of destination is of the Province to decide what to do with it - explains Then - We are available to take over the area only if it will be made a huntable area while if a Zrc remains there is already a project, three years old, to make it a rationalized hunting area which provides for restocking and hunting with prizes for farmers and the establishment of a dog training area ".
Finally, the theme of wild boars, a phenomenon that, according to what was reported by hunters, is being reduced due to the presence of wolves: "In the coming weeks - concludes Then - we will have a balance of the withdrawals carried out by the teams in the areas of competence, but according to the first results, have decreased a lot ".
Against the background that led to the decrease in the number of wild boars present in Lunigiana, the wolf, increasingly masters of the woods, on which the Province of Massa Carrara is carrying out a census in the Lunigiana area: "The number of wolves - concludes the President of 'Atc 13 Ms - is growing. We may very soon find ourselves facing a new problem that will require reflection from everyone ”.
