The Province of Lecce publishes a tender to find mammals and repopulate the Salento countryside. The animals must be healthy, adult and above all native species.
LECCE - Every now and then, in the Salento countryside, they can be seen running among the olive trees for the delight of children. But by now the hares have become almost a rare species, even in the province of Lecce.
Salento needs wildlife restocking and so the ATC of the Province of Lecce, that is the management committee of the Territorial Hunting Area, has published a notice to look for a company that can supply hundreds of hares.
They must be healthy, adult, in full sexual and fertile maturity, without trauma and malformations, possibly coming from Puglia.
For the project, foreseen in the 2009-2014 regional wildlife plan, 100 thousand euros have been allocated. The company that will win the contract will have to find native species hares in their natural state, as mentioned mainly from Puglia.
Reason: to prevent the arrival of infected hares from eastern countries, as discovered in Lombardy and Emilia Romagna. The delivery of the mammals must take place from 1 to 10 February next. And the contract to be paid by the winning company also includes the packaging and transport of the game.
