La selection hunting in June it offers the opportunity to enjoy the most beautiful month of the year from a privileged vantage point. Nature is in full splendor, the fields are expertly worked by the farmers, the wood offers a verdant coolness. The only slightly "uncomfortable" aspect is that the few hours that separate the fiery sunsets from the warm June dawns offer the hunter a few hours of refreshment and if you do not have the opportunity to take a nap during the day, fatigue can become truly disabling.
In planning the summer holidays with my partner Vincenzo, we could not help but carve out a beautiful week in mid-June to dedicate to the selection of roe deer hunting. My colleagues will be disappointed to see me return from Maremma without even the shadow of the tan they expect, but this week will be entirely dedicated to hunting, we will go out in the dark and in the dark we will return, taking advantage of the hours of sunshine to recover from up early and to plan the strategies of subsequent releases.
This year Vincenzo was assigned a young male. "If we were to find only 10% of the males we saw in March when we were looking for the female, we could complete the plan from the very first outing.”Vincenzo says slyly as he drives towards Manciano. "I'm just sorry it will be hard for you to reach the stakeout with those sticks". In fact, I think so too, it will be tiring to walk in the scrub "on board" the crutches that I have to use since following a small accident in the mountains I was forbidden to walk on my injured ankle. I'll give it my all, I don't want to be a burden and I want too much to accompany Vincenzo to the post. The first releases, however, were a disaster. Aside from the effort of advancing in the tall grass that tangles on crutches, and the arms that become soft as I trudge along, the real problem is that of the males we were sure to encounter not even a shadow!
