Il Ministry of the Interior decided to contact the prefects of the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano and to the president of the Aosta Valley Region to deepen the question of wolves. The Interior Ministry recognized the seriousness of the alarm, underlining how it is possible the killing of these animals if necessary. The green light came not many days after the Lupo Plan of the Ministry of the Environment, which instead spoke in completely different terms of the emergency.
Withdrawals have been authorized as long as there are no other viable solutions. The arm wrestling between the two dicasteries it is evident, for that of the Environment the hunt for the wild boar would be even harmful for the wolf. The note from the Interior Ministry is clear: "Recently, in some areas of the national territory there has been an increase in the presence of wolves which, approaching the towns in herd, cause alarm in the population or cause significant economic damage to farmers by attacking sheep, goats and sometimes cattle in grazing and shelter areas.
It is necessary to adopt preventive measures in order to protect public safety and safeguard the activities traditionally linked to the mountains, agriculture and animal husbandry ”. The debate is still open, animal welfare and environmental organizations are already raising their voices, but the situation must be addressed with the greatest possible realism.
