Animal welfare
With the aim of containing the number of pigeons in the city center and to ensure their full well-being, the Municipality of Cesena, in collaboration with the Anthea company of Rimini, has started a prevention plan this morning represented by the installation of two automatic contraceptive dispensers for pigeons aimed at sterilizing them and strengthening their state of health. These two stations, located in the green area of viale Carducci, near the Malatesta walls, and on the corner between via Eugenio Curiel and Mulini, at the entrance to the Serravalle gardens, will distribute multivitamin and anti-fertilizer feed from March to October for the purposes of the inhibition of the fertility of pigeon eggs.
The needs of the territory
“With the launch of this experimental action – comments the Councilor for Environmental Sustainability Francesca Lucchi – we want to respond to the various needs that have emerged in our territory linked to the issue of the often invasive presence of these birds. The aim is to reduce the reproduction of pigeons (verifiable through a census), to protect their health and to prevent them from causing inconvenience to residents, as has happened in other municipalities or in some areas of our city. Correct administration of the product, certified by the Ministry of Health, will already lead to a decrease in pigeon reproduction in the coming months. This system – continues the Councilor – presents itself as an ecologically sustainable, non-polluting and low environmental impact alternative, which does not alter animal welfare compared to other more invasive methods such as culling or forced movement”.
Population census
The distributors will spread the corn over a space of approximately 2/3 metres, making an adjustable fan arc. The feed, which due to its size cannot be ingested by small granivorous birds and therefore does not interfere in the reproduction of non-target species, will be based on nicarbazin, to be administered during the pigeon's breeding season for at least five days a week. This treatment also does not affect the quality of food normally used by the birds, therefore it does not cause any change in their lifestyle. The aim of the activity is also to carry out a census of the city pigeon population in order to know the distribution and density of these animals in the urbanized territory and to provide useful information to the Administration to control their expansion by making the populations numerically compatible with the city environment (source: Municipality of Cesena).
