La National Hunting Law has just turned 30 and according to a survey by WWF 76% of Italians are against this activity and would agree to ban it throughout the national territory. The environmental association has also drawn up a report on law 157 of '92 “Framework law on hunting and the protection of wildlife” which documents how “what should have been an innovative law was immediately betrayed by those who should have applied it, the Regions above all”. Also to implement the new constitutional principles, states the WWF, "we need a single text that protects wildlife as a whole by severely restricting hunting, strengthening controls and tightening sanctions".
From the survey carried out by Emg Different between 4 and 7 February 2022 on a sample of a thousand people, it emerges that “the sentiment that prevails among Italians seems to be clearly opposed to this activity, especially in consideration of its most cruel and uncontrolled aspects. 72% of the sample believes that hunting generates problems for the safety of citizens and 57% consider it a risk to people's health ”. 90% of the respondents said they were against the use of live calls for small birds and the allowed hunting for some endangered species, but also the use of ammunition containing lead and hunting practiced during the weekend.
The three main problems of the law analyzed in the report are the regional regulatory competence (every year, on average, the Council declares at least two regional laws constitutionally illegitimate for violation of the minimum standard of environmental protection), governance and planning (the management of the territory and resources leads to a series of power centers managed not with the aim of protecting the environment but of obtaining consensus) and prevention and repression of illegalities (there is a lack of effective sanctions and the necessary support to combat poaching and poaching for those involved in hunting surveillance) (HANDLE).
