In all Italian regions i regional hunting calendars 2019/20 and WWF, together with ENPA, LAC, LAV and LIPU, recently wrote to all the presidents and all the regional councilors with responsibility for hunting, as well as to the competent Ministers, to ask for the correct application of the Framework law on the protection of homeothermic fauna and hunting (Law No. 157/1992). "It seems incredible to have to write to institutional representatives to ask for compliance with the law, but we have to do it," he says Dante Caserta, Vice President of WWF Italy.
“In the past season, most of the Regions continued to systematically violate Italian laws and European and international principles regarding the protection of wildlife and hunting. As WWF, often together with other associations, we have been forced to appeal to the administrative courts challenging 12 different regional measures on hunting, bringing back 10 victories ". In the note sent to the Regions, the main requests are reiterated: closure of the hunting season for all bird species on 31 December, according to the principle of guaranteeing the complete protection of the species.
Alternatively, closing after this date only for species that are not endangered and on which there is sufficient and ascertained information, and in any case never beyond January 31; strict compliance with hunting periods for all mammals, in particular for species at risk and still lacking adequate management plans and conservation programs for them and their habitats, also in implementation of Management plans possibly adopted by the European Commission; general opening of the hunting season on 1st October, avoiding any form of pre-opening; subjecting to Incidence Assessment of all hunting management tools (regional wildlife-hunting plan, provincial wildlife-hunting plans and hunting calendars).
In the absence of the VINCA or in the presence of a VINCA with a negative outcome, explicit prohibition of hunting in the Natura 2000 sites such as Special Protection Areas (SPAs), Special Conservation Areas (ZCS) and Sites of Community Importance (SIC); extension of the conservation measures envisaged by current legislation for Natura 2000 sites to external habitats, such as "buffer zones"; strict application of the ban on hunting in the areas affected by fire as required by current legislation; ban on the use of hunting ammunition containing lead (certainly in wetlands, but the danger of pollution for the environment and also for humans applies everywhere).
The WWF for trade, only knows how to hinder hunting. X the rest …… No comment
