Emergency to face
The presence of the virus in some areas of the regional territory African swine fever (ASF) requires the maximum effort of action to limit health risks, for public safety and to contain damage to livestock and agricultural crops. To deal with the emergency, the three management bodies of the protected areas of Ticino and Lake Maggiore, Po Piedmontese and Valle Sesia, together with the Province of Vercelli, have decided to join efforts by signing a three-year agreement that optimizes the effectiveness of control actions of the wild boar (Sus scrofa) in the territories of respective competence.
Depopulation of wild boars
The agreement is achieved through the exchange of information, the coordination of current and future interventions and initiatives, and with the development of new synergies and collaborations, with careful reference to the Regional Council Resolution no. 15 – 5450, of 29 July 2022, “African Swine Fever. Adoption of the Regional Plan of Urgent Interventions for the control of African swine fever and the depopulation of the wild boar species in the free areas of the Piedmont Region (PRIU Piedmont)". The territories involved are those, in the Province of Vercelli, which fall within the Lame del Sesia natural park, in the Baragge natural reserve, in the Bosco della Partecipanza and Grange Vercellesi natural park, in the protected areas of the Piedmontese Po, in the protected areas of Valle Sesia and any further areas that may be necessary to identify.
Selected operators
The signatory bodies implement the collaboration through their own staff, park rangers and provincial wildlife agents together with external operators identified by each body and included in specific lists, i.e. selected operators as regards the Park Bodies and trained and selected volunteer hunting security guards (GGVV). by the Province, coordinating interventions in the territories of competence. With this agreement, the exchange of information and control activities are therefore strengthened, in particular, but not only, with regard to "searching" interventions - with vehicles and use of light sources. Information is shared regarding the authorizations issued to volunteer staff and on any search actions for injured wild boars using dogs.
Protected areas
In places where greater damage to agriculture is found due to the presence of wild boar, the Park Authorities may request the intervention of the Province's supervisory staff. In the case of sampling activities with the "hunting" technique, the Provincial staff can carry out the killing of wild boars both outside and inside the Protected Areas, in coordination with the local park rangers. All the organizations make themselves available to each other to carry out the culling of the animals captured with trapping systems with cages or fences located both outside and inside the boundaries of the protected areas. An innovative aspect of the signed agreement are the interventions that the Bodies are about to implement in the areas where the presence of wild boar is particularly critical for agricultural activity. In addition to even more stringent coordination, in case of particular needs, they undertake to identify operators who are included both in the lists of the Park Authorities and the Province and who therefore can operate both outside and inside the protected areas. The Park Authorities and the Province of Vercelli coordinate their wild boar containment interventions, taking care that all actions are carried out safely, thus reducing the risks of interference and avoiding overlaps with already planned actions (source: Parco Ticino Lago Maggiore) .
