Thursday 23 May, at 20,30 pm in Buzzi Room in viale Berlinguer 11 in Ravenna, an information evening will be held on how to prevent the health risk from West Nile Virus, so-called Nile fever. Among the suggested ways is also the possibility of introducing a greedy peach mosquito larvae: the gambusie which can be an alternative to the larvicide. The wetlands, the clear ones for hunting and the periodically flooded areas are widespread in the territory of the province of Ravenna and can constitute particularly active foci for the development and proliferation of the mosquito of the genus Culex, responsible for transmitting the West Nile virus. For this reason it is necessary to ensure effective management of these areas.
The meeting on Thursday is aimed at farmers, hunters and dog handlers to deepen the subject and underline the importance and necessity of periodic treatment of flooded areas, as a system for the prevention of diseases transmitted by vector insects, as well as on the correct practices to be adopted. Officials of the Emilia-Romagna Region will speak - Agriculture, Hunting and Fishing Service, of the Municipalities of the province of Ravenna and of the AUSL of Romagna and technicians of Azimut and Sireb.
On the occasion of the evening the "Guidelines for the management and treatment of periodically flooded areas" elaborated by Azimut and Sireb, the companies that deal with pest control services in the provincial territory, in which what and how to do to limit the proliferation of mosquitoes (products, quantities, frequencies, ecological methods) will be explained. The Region, the Ausl and the Municipalities of the province, in the context of a Integrated control plan for the fight against mosquitoes, are conducting a series of activities aimed at reducing the risk of infectious diseases transmissible to humans through the bites of vector insects.
Once upon a time when farmers planted rice, they used to put in juvenile carp that ate the larvae and mosquitoes and when these were cut they even had fish to eat!
Today, when the rice fields to save water are leveled with the laser, this useful and ancient practice no longer exists !!!
