The news of predations by wolves throughout the national territory to the detriment of farm animals and pets. The uncontrolled expansion of the wolf on throughout the national territory is causing the abandonment of the hilly and mountainous areas by farmers, breeders and the Malghesi, thanks to which our territory has always been the subject of free maintenance that has involved over the centuries clear advantages for the environment, for the economy and the ecosystem, advantages that will no longer be guaranteed if these people are forced to abandon their territories due to the excessive presence of the wolf.
As the experience of Israel and other nations has taught us where failure to manage the wolf has led these large predators to no longer fear man and no longer consider him as a natural enemy but as one of the many prey to eat, the same danger is being run in Italy too. Even in our territory, the wolf, having abandoned all fear of man, now frequently goes near inhabited centers if not even in the immediate vicinity of homes, schools and other anthropized environments. More and more frequent are the testimonies of close encounters between humans and wolves, with attitudes on the part of these animals increasingly aggressive and dangerous.
As is the case in many other European countries where the wolf problem has been addressed with objectivity and scientificity, also in Italy the wolf problem must be faced on a scientific basis, taking into consideration the high anthropization of our territories. We strongly appeal to the institutions for the government to adopt a national wolf management plan that includes monitoring, census and, in implementation of the provisions of the Habitat Directive 92/43 / EC, the containment of this species to make it compatible with the ecosystem but also with the anthropic activities exercised on our territory, first of all breeding, mountaineering and pastoralism. Before something irreparable happens to the detriment of human beings, the institutions have a duty to intervene promptly to safeguard the economy and the safety of people.
It is true that in Italy the institutions are always used to intervening emotionally after a calamitous event has occurred without ever thinking about prevention, but in this case the consequences of the inertia on the part of the institutions are all too predictable. Seen the more and more frequent reports that come to us from all over Italy and having received the cry of alarm that rises loudly from our territories, we ask with pressing insistence that the institutions act without further hesitation (Sergio Berlato - President of the Association for Rural Culture).
