"I express satisfaction with the approval of theagenda, my first signature on the containment of supernumerary ungulate heads ", explains Monica Canalis, deputy secretary of the Pd Piemonte and regional councilor. «The numbers are dramatic: in 30 years the number of ungulates in Italy has passed from 900 heads to over two million; Ispra reported that in 2017 the wild boars killed in Piedmont were 20 thousand (of which only 5 thousand through the provincial control plans), while in Tuscany in the same year there were 90 thousand; comparing the first five months of 2021 with the year 2020, it is noted that, on a monthly basis, the number of claims for wildlife damage submitted by Piedmontese agricultural companies has grown by 63%.
We are facing a real emergency, not just for agriculture, but also for public order, health and the environment. In fact, there are more and more road accidents caused by wild boars, in addition to the risk of transmitting the African swine fever and damage to the ecosystem. It is also evident that the current tools have not proved effective and sufficient.
Also thanks to the agenda of the Democratic Party, we can announce that regional guidelines and hiring of provincial wildlife operators, financed by regional funds, are on the way, as well as penalties for non-compliance with the selection objectives, enhancement of the tutor and dialogue with the prefects to verify the possibility for the auditors to adopt specific ordinances authorizing abatement plans. We will continue, however, to monitor carefully, to verify that these measures actually see the light ».
