La chamois population is constantly growing, in Trentino. Globally there is no cause for alarm, but there are three areas in which - in total contrast to the rest of the province - the ungulate specimens have dropped. Hence the need to reduce the possibility of shooting for hunting, which began last August 16. Every two years the situation is photographed in the Trentino mountains. The chamois census, which the hunters association makes, is a fundamental activity for the correct management of the species. Because it gives a sense of how the presence of the ungulate evolves and allows you to make consequent choices, both with respect to hunting and with regard to any need for support intervention.
As mentioned, at the provincial level there is good news. Just take a look at the history: in the two-year period 2015-2016 there were about 26 chamois in Trentino. In two-year period 2020-2021 have risen to 28 thousand. But if you narrow your view to individual territories, the situation is a bit more patchy. While in most areas there is a certain stability, or even a growth, there are areas of territory in which more or less marked downturns have occurred. In particular in three areas, there was a significant decline: in the Destra Valsugana it occurred a decrease of 13,51%, while the worst went in Maddalene, where there was a decrease of 49,54% and Redival, with a reduction of chamois in the order of 20,72%. The possibility of hunting also depends on the size of the ungulate population.
With precise rules, defined last May by the program "Goals and management criteria for chamois". Trivially very much, it is necessary to provide for a management of hunting that favors a balanced distribution of the chamois. The objective has been identified for each individual area, which can be - depending on the conditions of the chamois population in that area - of maintaining the total number of ungulates, decreasing or increasing the general population. And this is precisely the purpose of the censuses. In this context, one rule is fixed: you can never cut down more than 15% of the population in an area. Hence the management project approved a few days ago, with the abatement plan. That some surprises reserved for some hunters' associations.
As for the number of heads general, 3.444 heads will be hunted this year, of which 1710 males and 1734 females, in the various categories. But with respect to the proposed slaughter plan, the Wildlife Service has decided on a significant reduction, precisely in the areas where the population of chamois has decreased. Because the accounts did not add up, compared to the general criteria defined by the Province. A withdrawal rate was proposed for Maddalene and Redival 14,8% and 14,57% respectively, therefore very close to the maximum possible, despite the significant decrease of specimens in the area. As for the Destra Valsugana, an allocation rate of 15,42%, even beyond the maximum possible, and without taking into account the reduction of chamois. Impossible.
Hence the choice of the Wildlife Service to redefine the assignments. As for the number of heads that can be killed, these are the assignments for each area: Adamello 380, Ala 136, Baldo 100, Bondone Stivo 114, Brenta 579, Cadria - Altissimo 173, Cima d'Asta 160, Croce 42, Destra Chiese 82, Destra Fassa 77, Destra Valsugana 136, Lagorai 142, Latemar 58, Ledro 35, Maddalene 28, Misone Casale 55, Monte Corno 40, Paganella 136, Pale di San Martino 70, Paneveggio 30, Pasubio 174, Presanella 219, Rabbi 53, Redival 22, Sinistra Fassa 140, Sinistra Noce 131, Vette Feltrine 0, Vigolana 132 (The Adige).
