The European Commission replied to the parliamentary question presented by the Hon. Sergio Berlato, Italian Member of the European Parliament, with which he wondered if it was useful to include hunters as protagonists in the monitoring operation of the territory to contribute to the early identification ofbird flu in wildlife, also through the use of live calls. In its response, the European Commission stresses that hunters play a significant role in the early detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in wild birds.
This role is recognized and supported by EU law, as it is essential to quickly report any cases of abnormal mortality or major outbreaks of the disease in wildlife, especially aquatic fauna. In particular, the Commission notes how the competent authority can authorize, as part of an avian influenza surveillance program and in function of the evaluation of the epidemiological situation, the use of decoy birds of the orders anseriformes and caradriformes even in high-risk areas.
"We are pleased to see that the Community institutions have underlined what we have always said", writes in a note the Hon. Sergio Berlato, Italian Member of the European Parliament. Following this official pronouncement by the European Commission, we hope that it will no longer take place in Italy what happened during the hunting season that is ending, when the use of live calls was unjustly suspended on the pretext of an outbreak of avian flu in the Netherlands.
