La Viper: Dog victims of poison are increasing again this year !!
The average of the individuals has a length that can reach 60 cm, the head, characteristic, is flat and triangular, the massive body that ends abruptly with a rather short tail.
La viper it is active between April and November. Generally the vipers are rather shy reptiles that prefer to flee at the slightest noise and that attack only if unable to escape, in which case they assume a threatening attitude, swelling and blowing. The anatomical parts where the viper frequently bites the dog are the extremities of the limbs and the muzzle, the latter site where the bite is more dangerous due to its high blood supply.
Unfortunately, what the hunter can do is not much, he must immediately contact a veterinarian, who will have the opportunity to administer the antiodific serum to the animal, to implement a fluid therapy necessary to limit the risks of cardio-circulatory collapse and to carry out adequate antibiotic therapy. In the meantime: reassure the dog and possibly keep it still to prevent the movements from accelerating the diffusion of the toxic in the organism through the blood circulation. If the first medical treatments are timely, are successful and the dog passes the critical phase, it will still be advisable for the dog to remain under veterinary observation, perhaps hospitalized, for at least 72 hours. It is necessary, in fact, to bear in mind that the effects of the poison in the blood and from this conveyed in certain organs, especially in the liver, can even a few days later cause coagulation problems.
It is difficult to establish in advance whether the dog will return to being the former athlete; sometimes owing to the damage suffered (usually to the kidneys and liver) they may not be completely recoverable.
Obviously, this evaluation is EXCLUSIVELY up to the veterinarian who, with appropriate clinical monitoring and undermined laboratory analyzes, will be able to advise you in the best possible way !!
