The results of the tests
«The depopulation of the Solarolo di Goito herd is a necessary action to prevent the spread of the virus within our province. African swine fever. It is worth remembering that there is no outbreak, since the tests carried out have fortunately given negative results and all the biosafety principles on the farm have been fully respected, but we cannot avoid the principle of maximum precaution. The survival of the pig sector is at stake."
Hypotheses averted
These are the words of the president of Confagricoltura Mantova, Alberto Cortesi, regarding the load of piglets arriving in Mantua from a Pavia farm in which a PSA positivity was then found: «The random tests carried out on Wednesday – continues Cortesi – have so far the most serious of hypotheses has been averted, namely the presence of positive pigs within a Mantua farm. This doesn't change anything in any case, the attention threshold must be kept very high, and the biosecurity measures strengthened and enhanced as much as possible."
Pigs in danger
The province of Mantua, with approximately 1,1 million pigs, is the second in Lombardy in terms of number of animals raised, behind only Brescia. In Lombardy there are a total of around 4,5 million pigs: «These data make us understand the value of the supply chain, and how much this could be put at risk by the spread of ASF. We must do everything to keep it away from our farms. We remind you once again that the Psa virus is not dangerous for humans" (source: Confagricoltura Padova).
