New offensive of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region against the invasion of nutria. It is a fight that began in 2017 against these invading animals originating from South America, present in Friuli by 70s with the first few specimens which then reproduced excessively to reach today a population of 70 thousand specimens. For years they have thus been protagonists not only in the compromise of the natural ecosystem and damage to crops (whose owners, however, are not restored), but above all to threaten the hydrogeological stability of the territory.
These rodents, in fact, build their burrows in the banks of the canals, moving the ground and causing infiltrations and collapses of the banks. The reclamation consortia of our region have indicated over 16,3 million damages recorded so far. The new three-year plan to eradicate the coypu, just approved by the regional administration, aims precisely to eliminate this species, even if it will be more likely to succeed only in containing it, limiting its number and diffusion.
And to do this, two practices are authorized, which can be exercised by the forestry personnel, by hunting guards, by personnel in charge and also by the farmers themselves. The first technique, the preferred one, is their capture through cages-traps, and then proceed with the deletion, as soon as possible, with firearms or gas containers. Or, according to the technique indicated, the classic hunting. Plan it does not provide for numerical limitations of killing, so the more they are eliminated the better (IlFriuli.it).
