Hunting: Abruzzo, 2014-2015 Hunting Calendar, WWF has decided not to appeal to the TAR against the new Hunting Calendar.
In Abruzzo, a more respectful management of the immense wealth represented by an exceptional heritage of biodiversity and by the bear in particular is indispensable. The hunting calendar and more generally regional policy must take further steps forward to be in line with the real needs for the protection and preservation of this species and with what was declared by the regional government a few weeks ago, immediately after the loss of yet another specimen. , which took place in Pettorano sul Gizio. Those who govern us are called to protect with seriousness and punctuality a species of extraordinary importance in the world like the bear. The entire land management policy, as well as that of hunting, must be in line with this need and show an extraordinary commitment. Abruzzo has in fact the great responsibility and duty to preserve and maintain for future generations the only viable population of Marsican brown bears still alive. However, recognizing some positive steps and the commitment declared by Councilor Dino Pepe, the WWF has decided not to resort to the hunting calendar.
“It was - comments the regional delegate Luciano Di Tizio - a difficult choice, carefully evaluated with the national and local experts of our association and with the lawyer. Michele Pezone, author of the recent appeals on hunting presented to administrative justice, all accepted. In the end, the desire to trust a regional government and a councilor elected a few months ago prevailed, in the hope that the promises will be followed shortly by concrete facts. However, let me clarify immediately that we have not signed a blank bill: the WWF will continue to monitor and ask for concrete steps to start a different and better hunting management. The most important hunters' associations have also signed a protocol for the protection of bears with the Ministry of the Environment, recognizing that we are in an exceptional risk situation that requires exceptional measures. The next move is up to councilor Pepe: convene a table to start a wide-ranging discussion on the problems that your councilor is called upon to manage ”.
The hunting calendar, even if of enormous importance, represents only one aspect of the problem: it is necessary to have a greater and more punctual respect to the whole range of the commitments that the Region has assumed by signing the PATOM, Plan for the protection of the Marsican bear. . "A step forward - concludes Massimiliano Rocco, Head of Species and LIFE Arctos for WWF Italy - has been made with the latest commitments and with the appointment of a representative in the AG, now we expect to continue along this path also through planning territorial adequate, with the commitment to seriously diversify the hunting activity in space and time and not to risk that this practice could interfere with the conservation of the bear or other species, the Italic hare for example, which require extraordinary interventions and of choices that may also seem unpopular but which would allow us not to lose any element of our wonderful regional biodiversity ".
