Hunting and Fauna: Pisa, two hunters saved a poisoned wolf while they were hunting in the Melandrone territories.
During a day that was to be entirely dedicated to hunting, Alessandro and Federico Nicosia, both from Rosignano Solvay, came across a wolf. “Wednesday, September 24, in the morning - says Alessandro Nicosia who among other things is a municipal police officer in Rosignano - my brother and I decided to go hunting. Around 10 am, we were 200 meters from the Malandrone and near the Terriccio estate. Michel, my English Pointer dog, froze and started heading for the bush ”. “At the time I thought that a pheasant took off; instead, the dog's attitude intrigued me and I approached the wood: there, in the middle of the brambles, near a small stream, there was a big gray wolf, motionless. After the first surprise, when I understood the state of health of the animal, I immediately called the Provincial Police. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Salvagno, the hunting guards of Livorno and then Pisa arrived and the animal was transferred to the clinic ”.
It is assumed that the wolf has ingested poisonous substances but for the actual diagnosis we will have to wait for the result of the blood tests. "When I arrived on the spot the wolf - says Dr. Salvagno - a beautiful male of 39 kilograms, had froth at the mouth and was no longer able to move". It was the doctor who gave the animal the first treatment.
“When the Pisa Provincial Police arrived, the wolf, with a muzzle, was loaded into the car and transferred to the veterinary clinic where he is currently under the care of Professor Michele Corazza - says the doctor. He is currently in therapy but his condition seemed to be improving. In the clinic, the wolf will be subjected to complete analyzes to establish the exact causes of his discomfort ”.
If all goes well, and the animal will be able to overcome the crisis, through the examination of the hair its DNA will be established, also to understand if it is a pure wolf or a hybrid species. "If it is a pure wolf and not a hybrid - explains Marina Salvagno - it will be placed a radio collar with which it will be possible to follow its movements once reinserted in nature". Alessandro Nicosia, who in these hours continues to follow the fate of the rescued animal, emphasizes the relationship between the environment and hunting: "this story shows that there are still hunters, like us, who respect the rules and love the 'environment".
