The President of the Tuscany Region, Enrico Rossi, responds to the appeal addressed to him by the citizens regarding the ungulate emergency in the region: hunting possible all year round in areas where the density of animals is excessive.
"I believe that in Tuscany there are all the conditions to adequately address, and to bring to a solution, the problem represented by the excessive presence of wild boars, both on the island of Elba, in Maremma, and in any other area".
Regarding the request for a drastic solution to the ungulate problem in the face of the enormous damage that these animals cause every year, Rossi says: "The conditions are those already provided for by regional law number 3 of 1994 and its implementing regulation, approved just this summer . To those who ask me to authorize wild boar hunting throughout the year, I reply that this is already possible, wherever their density has become excessive. It is up to the Provinces, also in agreement with the Territorial Areas of Hunting and with the managing bodies of regional parks and protected areas, to adopt management and collection plans, i.e. killing, but also catching by means of cages, with the aim of guaranteeing a presence sustainable development of these animals ".
Furthermore, Rossi continues: “And, according to article 88 of the implementing regulation, they can do so by allowing interventions throughout the year. As for the damage that these animals cause, the plan that the provincial administrations approve must also include interventions for the prevention of damage ”.
The Provinces themselves, in accordance with the regional law and by giving appropriate communication to the Region, can implement extraordinary management plans if the presence of boars and other ungulates is considered incompatible with agricultural activities despite the fact that an optimal density of 2,5 head per 100 hectares has been determined for the wild boar in the region.
