Cries of alarm from the mayors of the Island of Elba for the unsustainable situation of wild boars and ask for a special project to deal with the ungulate emergency by 15 October otherwise culling orders.
In fact, a project prepared by a specific technical commission is required to effectively deal with the situation of ungulates on the island. The Mayors of Elba also let it be known that if the measures adopted do not bring acceptable results, they will be forced to issue killing orders for safety reasons.
During the meeting between the deputy prefect for Elba affairs, Giovanni Daveti, the representatives of the Province, the Mayors, the representatives of the Forestry Corps, the representatives of the ATC and the National Park, some guidelines emerged for the solution of the problem.
The Deputy Prefect explains “I found a good cooperation in wanting to tackle the problem, especially from the Park and the hunters. This planning must be ready by October 15, so as to be able to give assurances to farmers and users, to all those who suffer the most damage from the presence of ungulates ”.
For the Deputy Prefect, it will be the task of the commission to decide how and when to intervene as long as the problem can be solved: "In the face of an emergency situation, what interests me is that a project is varied that identifies a compatible number of these animals with our territorial reality. Then whether it will be possible to reach an eradication or other forms of limitation or elimination will be the operators who will decide ». From the meeting it emerged therefore that the ungulate problem exists but obviously there are some divergences on the methods of resolution.
Instead, the mayors of Portoferraio and Marciana decided on the need for strong interventions against the ungulates present on the island in large numbers such as boars and mouflons: “We are in favor of the eradication of wild boars and mouflons - says the mayor of Portoferraio, Roberto Peria - if radical measures are not adopted for the elimination of this highly harmful species, it will fall into the problem again within a few years ”.
Of the same idea is the mayor of Marciana, Anna Bulgaresi, who presented some reports made by private individuals and the municipal police as well as a collection of signatures from farmers who ask for the elimination of wild boars.
In fact, Bulgaresi says: "I rest of my opinion we want to eradicate wild boars and mouflons also because we start talking about damage related to public hygiene".
"If the hypothesized planning - specifies the mayor of Marciana - does not produce any results, all that remains is the hypothesis of resorting to the ordinances that the mayors can make for reasons of public health and safety".
