The resolutions concerning the pre-opening of the hunting season, the mobility of hunters from outside the region and hunting in derogation for starling have been approved by the Tuscan Regional Council.
The Hunting Associations have worked to ensure legal certainty for hunters and a balanced response to the problems exposed by farmers, especially as regards the levy in derogation of the transfer, a species now well-known for the enormous damage caused each year to the crops that according to estimates, they increased by 300%.
Based on the resolutions presented to the Regional Council by the councilor for agriculture and hunting Gianni Salvadori it will be possible to hunt the starling in derogation in 66 Tuscan municipalities and a single pre-opening day is confirmed in four of the ten Tuscan provinces.
"The resolution that authorizes the" levy in derogation "of the transfer - explains Salvadori - is linked to the territories that have reported the greatest damage to valuable agricultural crops, although it is our opinion that the main road would be to reinsert the transfer among the huntable species. "
“The prevention measures implemented by the provinces - continues the commissioner Salvadori - were not sufficient to contain the raids of fruit, vegetables, grapes and olives carried out by these birds, in the absence of a culling measure in derogation. In fact, last year - continues the regional councilor - no derogation was approved and, after years of continuous decrease in damage, we unfortunately had to see a very strong increase in attacks on the most valuable crops, with a leap of more than 300% of the economic damage compared to the previous year.
Faced with this situation - underlines Salvadori - the Region has decided to intervene. It did so after having received both the alarm of the agricultural professional organizations, and the favorable opinions of the national scientific institutes and the European Commission itself and adopted a provision that authorizes hunters to defend the crops in place ”.
