The Ringing Station of thePonza Island has made public the total catches relating to the 2017 season. The specimens captured were 13352, an interesting number, even if in decline compared to the total of previous season: in 2016, in fact, the total catches were over 15 thousand. The most common species was that of the robin, since the total catches stopped at 2339.
The ideal “podium” of this Lazio station is then completed by the second place of the beccafico (1606 catches) and by the sterpazzola (1107). Comparing this vintage with the previous ones, it must be emphasized how 2017 was the seventh most intense year in terms of catches. The record is not very far in time, given that in 2015 the specimens were 23685, almost double compared to last season. To find numbers close to 13 thousand birds in 2017, however, it is necessary to refer to 2014 (about 14 thousand birds).
This structure, known as Migration Research Center, was opened in 2002: the research is carried out in collaboration with Italian and foreign universities and institutes, without forgetting the respect of the main aims linked to ecophysiology and phenology. Finally, every data collected is used to monitor the status and trends of migrating European bird populations.
