The risk of incorrect information
We witness with amazement the swarm of press releases from some politicians who attempt to exclusively grab the merits of the alleged "downgrading of the wolf in Europe from a highly protected species to a simply protected species". Perhaps caught in a crisis of communicative incontinence, these individuals run the risk of providing inadequate and untruthful information to public opinion. What has been achieved in Europe, the result of a demanding team effort between many subjects including in the world of politics, is the decision of the European Commission to propose to the other community institutions the reduction of the protection status of the wolf from strictly protected species to protected species. This is the beginning of a long journey that could lead us to that final result that we all hope for, namely the modification of the Community Annexes in such a way as to favor the application of the art. 16 of the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) which would allow all member states of the European Union to equip themselves and apply adequate national wolf management and containment plans in order to guarantee a balance between the various wild species and a compatibility between the presence of the wolf and human activities, especially with agriculture, breeding and pastoralism.
Tragic communication error
I want to remind you that the path is still long and full of obstacles, given that the current majority that governs the Parliament and the European Commission is made up of a centre-left coalition represented by the political families of the Popolari, Socialists, Liberals and Greens, the same majority which approved the ban on the use of lead in wetlands, the obligation of green homes, the ban on the use of diesel and petrol engines, meat and synthetic foods, worm and grasshopper meal for human consumption, the return to nature with the abandonment of a substantial part of our agricultural territories. It would then be a tragic communication error to state that wolf hunting will be possible, a fallacious communication that would trigger the predictable hysterical reactions of the animal-environmentalist world which would take this pretext to unleash yet another ideological war against hunting.
An important stage
As a hunter I would like to clarify that I am not interested in hunting the wolf but I hope that personnel, specially trained and appointed by the institutions, can implement adequate management and containment plans which allow, where possible, compatibility between the presence of the wolf, the protection of the ecosystem and compatibility with human activities. In suggesting to those who are suffering from a crisis of communicative incontinence to equip themselves with adequate diapers imbued with common sense, we would like to thank all the MEPs of all the political forces for the precious teamwork provided up to now, the representatives of the agricultural professional organisations, the representatives from the world of livestock and sheep farming, all the members of the current government who have understood and supported the requests of all the bearers of rural culture. All together we have reached an important stage in our journey which, if we remain united, will lead us to achieve the final result for which we have all worked with commitment and competence (Hon. Sergio Berlato, president of ACR - Associazione Cultura Rurale) .
