The Province of Verona has been authorized by the Region for the extraordinary opening of the wild boar hunting from ambush starting from the day of August. As already anticipated by the councilor Giuseppe Pan last June, the provincial councilor Stefano Marcolini, with responsibility for hunting, confirmed the authorization, but only for Lessinia, while the eradication plan envisaged for the wild boar, i.e. the opening of hunting from November 1st to January 31st, in addition to the normal control activity entrusted to the Provincial Police and valid for the whole year. Marcolini explains the advance for Lessinia with the fact that "the request came from the mayors of the territory, urged by the farmers of the area, in particular from Valpolicella, where the ripening of the grapes, grown on guyot systems, facilitates the devastation of wild boars and severe crop damage. Therefore, the Province towards the wild boar is implementing all the possible strategies necessary to limit its expansion, but at the same time to enhance the wild boar as a resource and not just as a problem ».
The overall objective is to collect a maximum of 800 animals during hunting in Lessinia (last hunting season there were 752) and at least 200 animals in control over the entire provincial territory, for a total of a thousand specimens, thus to allow, at least partially, the sustainability of the damage. «AL PIANO success will be guaranteed if there is collaboration and synergy between the various stakeholders, from farmers to hunters, to mayors and common citizens who can suffer damage from a massive presence of these ungulates also on the street and in the districts. Precisely for this reason, there is a need for the collaboration of the Alpine districts, the territorial hunting areas (ATC) and hunting associations ", reiterates the councilor Marcolini," and more generally of those who in recent years have been authorized by the Province to wild boar hunting. For the containment of the damage caused by the wild boar there is in fact a need for the help of everyone, from hunters, hunting institutes, agricultural and environmentalist professional organizations, and the competent bodies, Region, Province and Municipalities.
At this moment, the Province still has the task of coordinating all these forces, dictating the technical and administrative procedures for the rational management of this species: procedures, however, which without the help of the hunting world, and not only, are not sufficient". This year, on the advice of Ispra, the Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, and the regional authorization, it was possible to postpone the closing time of the boar selection hunt to two hours after sunset (after communicating to the Provincial Police): this should lead to a better performance of the interventions. At the same time, the maximum number of items that can be withdrawn was raised from 600 to 800.
