Important updates from the ringing station of the island of Ponza: "On 21 April 2022 at 8 in the morning the Ponza station had the honor of ringing the first example for Italy of Seebohm Wheatear (Oenanthe seebohmi). A young male, arrived during strong southeast wind conditions with overcast skies. It could be hypothesized, but difficult to verify, that it was this wind that pushed it to our shores. Indeed, this species is rare and accidental in our nation.
The Seebohm's Northern Wheatear is a passerine bird that nests in Maghreb region of North Africa and winters in the western Sahel. In the past it was considered a subspecies of the wheatear as O.oenanthe seebohmi, ma has been reclassified as a distinct species by the IOC in 2021. It is a migrant who prefers prairie areas and feeds on insects and invertebrates. His presence in Italy was reported two years ago in Abruzzo, but no specimen had ever been ringed up until now "(source: CISCA ONLUS).
