Valenghe Safety and Danger - State Forestry Corps: The avalanche danger level remains MARKED in Friuli Venezia Giulia and is MODERATE in Trentino Alto Adige, Valle d'Aosta, Veneto, Piedmont, Lombardy and the Central Apennines.
Rome, 21 January 2011 - The avalanche warning is high in our country due to the abundant rainfall in the last few hours on numerous sectors of the Alps. In particular, the avalanche danger level in Friuli Venezia Giulia remains MARKED, while it is MODERATE in Trentino Alto Adige, Valle d'Aosta, Veneto, Piedmont, Lombardy and on the Umbrian-Marche and Emilia-Romagna Apennines.
After the recent precipitation in the Julian Alps, the snowpack is characterized on the surface by a layer of unconsolidated fresh snow which can give rise to spontaneous triggering of small loosened avalanches especially on the slopes exposed to the sun, while the avalanche warning it is MODERATE on the Carnic pre-Alps. Particular attention should be paid when crossing open steep slopes and gullies.
The degree of danger is MODERATE in the Lombard Alps due to possible spontaneous triggering or triggers caused by a strong overload, especially on steep slopes and in the central hours of the day, while it is WEAK in the Pavia Apennines. In general, the snowpack is moderately consolidated and the danger trend is stationary.
MODERATE avalanche danger also on Piedmont, Veneto, Trentino Alto Adige and Valle d'Aosta, even if a low-lying vortex at high altitude determines unstable weather conditions over most of the Italian regions. The avalanche danger also rises to MODERATE on the Umbrian-Marche Apennines, on the Emilia-Romagna Apennines and on part of the northern Tyrrhenian one due to the rains that have been raging on Central Italy in the last few hours.
The avalanche warning is weak, however, in the rest of the mountainous areas of the Peninsula at all altitudes and at all aspects. In any case, the State Forestry Corps invites you to always inquire about the weather conditions and the possible avalanche danger before going to the mountains. You can ski safely on the groomed and marked slopes, where however it is advisable to avoid off-piste on the slopes that dominate the ski slopes, to moderate the speed according to your technical skiing skills and to respect the present signs.
