The long wait is over
The hunting season will open on Sunday 17 September 2023 and close on Monday 31 January 2024. These are the dates set by the Hunting calendar for the 2023-2024 season, approved by resolution of the Veneto Regional Council on the proposal of the Regional Councilor for Hunting Cristiano Corazzari and subject to the favorable opinion of the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA). The calendar includes some pre-opening days (2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 September) for the jay, magpie, carrion crow and hooded crow species. Wood pigeon hunting is confirmed, in the two pre-opening days of 2 and 3 September, also in consideration of the good state of the population in the regional territory. Finally, green light for the pre-opening of the dove species on 2 and 3 September next in compliance with the management plan for this species.
Corazzari's words
“Once again this year – declared the regional councilor for hunting, Cristiano Corazzari – the long and in-depth preliminary work has produced a balanced calendar, respectful of the environment, of European and national regulations, of the numerical consistency of the different species and of the right of hunters to exercise their activity and which has obtained, for most of the management choices made by the administration, the sharing by ISPRA". The hunting calendar specifies the species allowed for sampling and the relative hunting periods, as well as the number of hunting days per week, which cannot exceed three, with the hunter free to choose, with the exception of Tuesdays and Fridays . The integration of two days is foreseen for the hunting of migratory fauna from ambush only in the months of October and November. The calendar also fixes the daily and seasonal maximum of game taken and the start and end time of the hunting day.
What's new in the text
The closing dates for the next hunting season will be 20 January 2024 for Cesena, Redwing and Song Thrush and 31 January 2024 for all species of aquatic birds. News of the 2023-2024 calendar concerns the reintroduction, among the species subject to withdrawal, of the Moriglione, in accordance with the opinion expressed by ISPRA and in execution of the recently approved Management Plan. With regards to sedentary game, the regional administration proposes once again a single calendar at the regional level, without differentiating between the various provincial territories and between territorial hunting areas, a choice which makes it possible to simplify and rationalize hunting in the Veneto region. Finally, the hunting of ungulates (deer, alpine chamois, roe deer, red deer, mouflon) is authorized and regulated by the territorial offices, whose area falls wholly or in part in the wildlife area of the Alps. In other areas, not included in the wildlife area of the Alps, only selective sampling is allowed, based on qualitative and quantitative abatement plans, authorized and regulated by the territorial offices themselves (source: FIDC).
